July 29: One or two reasons why I really love London

I’m back in Nice now, happy to be with Joel and Ted. It’s not even very hot, though the sky is shimmering blue. A London sky simply can’t muster the same strength for such a blue – it’s not showy like that. It’s part of what makes London beautiful. Other things are:

Chiswick High Road

Bookshops where I understand everything (like Blackwells in Charing Cross Road)

Food we like (these are Joel's favourite char siu buns in Chinatown)

Green stuff everywhere (like these rosehips on The Avenue)

The Tube - even if it is incredibly expensive (this is our stop, Turnham Green)

More green stuff, like this woodland which is just an ordinary part of life (this is on the way to Heather and Andy's house)

The River - here looking all twinkly and sophisticated

The River - here looking full of eccentrics (Oliver is the one in the wig) who are doing the Swan pub's raft race near Heather and Andy's

Friends: Heather and Oliver (dressed to cross the river as part of a 'Baywatch' team)

Friends: Sylvie and Marisa

Friends: Isabella in her kitchen

Friends: being a tour guide on the Thames Clipper with Katia's kids, Karenna and Eli

Virgin Active: Teresa at the gym - the gym is the thing I miss almost more than anything else!

London sky: through Sylvie's kitchen window

About Suellen Grealy

In 2011, a series of coincidences led my husband Joel, our cat Ted and me away from London, where we lived quite happily for 30 years, to Nice, where Joel grew up. While he and his sister ran their restaurant, I wrote a novel. Family being family, Joel and his sister no longer work together. Writing being writing, the novel lingers on... Meanwhile, we've found ways of living a completely different life from the one we had in London, including running our own restaurant together, 7 Villermont. The only constants are our Ted, our now-battered Peugeot, and each other. Everything else is a complete surprise
